SXSW Proposal: iBeacons Beyond Retail

Posted on .

I submitted a proposal for a talk at the 2015 SXSW Interactive conference, and I'd like your vote. The selection process for SXSW takes into consideration (as 30% of the decision) public voting on proposals. If you find my idea compelling, your vote is the best way to let the SXSW staff and advisory board know. If you have any questions, I'd love to chat on Twitter at @willdages.

About the Proposal

My proposal is for a talk called "iBeacons Beyond Retail." You can read the full rundown on the SXSW PanelPicker site here: iBeacons Beyond Retail by Will Dages.

I've been excited about iBeacons since Apple announced them a few years ago. They help to solve a very interesting problem: not where in the world are you, but how close are you to this thing? Proximity sensors, with the right control over precision, allow for some very exciting possibilities.

But I've been a bit frustrated by how retail implementations have dominated a lot of the discussions around these proximity sensors. Last year, Findaway World sent me to SXSW and I had the pleasure of meeting a group of people who were also really excited about the technology. We met in the hallway outside of a panel discussion about beacons, and had a great discussion. Hearing their thoughts on what the potentials were, how they've experimented with beacons already, and where they thought the technology was going did exactly what SXSW is meant to do: it energized me. It connected me with other people who are just as passionate as I am, and showed me that I wasn't the only one who was craving a bit more from the current beacon discussion.

So I'm proposing a talk that is meant to spark ideas and inspiration. A talk with a broad range of case studies and patterns around the use of iBeacons outside of the 'classic' retail use-case. I will explore what this new form of context has enabled developers to do, what companies and services have emerged as a result, and highlight some creative ways that they are being used. My goal is to do all this in a way that sparks your imagination with a hundred ideas. I want you to walk away from this talk feeling energized, just as the hallway conversation last year left me.
